We’re On A Mission In October

October’s public service outreach will benefit Mission of Mercy, a mobile medical and dental program headquartered in Frederick that serves 5,000 patients annually at nine clinic sites. GFAF member donations will be auctioned off at Mission of Mercy’s November Gala with all proceeds benefiting the uninsured, underinsured and those needing healthcare who “fall through the cracks” of our system.

A little bit about Mission of MercyWhen you get a toothache, how long does it take you to see your dentist? When you have the flu, are you able to call a doctor and be treated? The big question is: Do you have health insurance? If you do, you probably don’t think twice about it, but over 17,000 Frederick County citizens agonize over these very situations because they do not have health insurance. Mission of Mercy has been providing care to the working poor of Frederick County for over 15 years through the generosity of volunteer doctors, dentists, nurses and staff. Mission of Mercy receives no government funding and relies on private donations from foundations, corporations and people just like YOU. For most of us being sick is an inconvenience. For our patients, it is a catastropheBring your donations to “Building Your Personal Brand” on October 15th and receive a door prize ticket as our thank you for supporting Mission of Mercy.Wished for auction items:• Gift cards of any denomination to restaurants, shops, services, itunes, etc.• Gift Baskets• Auction-worthy itemsMonetary donations are also welcomedTo learn more about Mission of Mercy please visit their website at www.amissionofmercy.org or call 301.682.5683A big thank you to Natalie Wheeler of American Public University System for donating her time and design talents to designing Mission of Mercy’s brochure and postcard.

Breakfast Session A Success

The first GFAF Breakfast Session for freelancers and micro-business owners was a great start to the 2009/2010 GFAF calendar. With 11 attendees, the discussion on support networks brought the group to topics of relying on networks (including our friends and family) to help or guide us when times are tough. It was agreed that the importance/value of extending your networking by joining groups such as GFAF, AIGA and other industry and non-industry-related networking groups is a great way to build your network to help support you when you need it most. The size and strength of your network can help you discover that you are not alone, even when you feel like you are. Pick up where the conversation left off here.

A big thank you to all the attendees: Kim Dow, Harriett Wise, James Hersick, Diane Demarco, Kristina Hopkins, Adam Frey, Kimberly Prior, Mary Ann Beane, Megan Mullaney, Jennifer Mellace and Ellen Byrne.

Flying High at Flying Dog

The Key 103 gang and friends mug it up.

Thursday, September 17th saw approximately 50 members gather for the first event of our calendar year. Between the flying dogs (the beer, what else?), the hot dogs (ask Cheri Baker, they’re “real”), the top dog (Chef Christine Van Bloem, who gave an amusing, to-the-point business presentation and plied us with chocolate chip cookies) and the Tails of Hope poster dogs, it was…dare we say it?…a dog-gone good time. After two hours, the party was still in full swing and served to raise the level of excitement and expectation for the rest of the year.
