Immersion Active Makes Inc. 500|5000 List Of The Fastest Growing Companies In The United States

Immersion Active, the only internet marketing agency in the United States focused solely on the baby boomer and senior markets, made the 2009 Inc. 500|5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in the country. The company’s ranking at 1,624, reflects a 197 percent growth between 2005 and 2008.This year’s Inc. 500|5000 list features businesses that are both innovative and resistant to the down economy.

David Weigelt, partner and chief marketing strategist, said that this recognition is a larger indicator of the strength of Immersion Active’s niche.“For the first time in history, the majority of adults in the United States are over the age of 40,” he said. “Doing well in the midst of this economy is a reflection of how companies are taking marketing to baby boomers and seniors seriously.”

“Of course we look to grow financially, but monetary growth isn’t our sole focus,” partner and creative director Jonathan Boehman explained. “We pride ourselves on creating engaging and meaningful online experiences for mature consumers and are continually honing our approach.”“It goes without saying that an incredibly talented and hard-working team is behind all of this,” Weigelt said, “but I suppose we also have the boomers to thank.”The Inc. 500|5000 list is published yearly in the September issue of Inc. Magazine.

The list measures revenue growth from 2005 through 2008. To qualify, companies must be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent – not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies – as of December 31, 2008, and have had at least $200,000 in revenue in 2005, and $2 million in 2008.

ron.jpgHow do you feel about being the 2009 ADDY Collateral Designer?
I feel pretty good about it. I like the final piece with Addy as the starlet. It was fun to see how she came to life, so to speak.
Can you tell us a little bit about where you work ?
The Art Department is a design studio. Our niche is publication design, however, we have become quite versatile with advertising and marketing campaigns.

What is your job title there? Creative Director, but I also don the title of janitor now and then.

What is your education and work experience? Montgomery College and University of Maryland. I worked several years in a small design studio called AURAS Design and also served as Deputy Art Directory at AARP The Magazine.

Who are your clients? Possibly you!

How do you brainstorm for ideas?
Books, music, and long walks. My favorite is taking my iPod and walking through the Antique Emporium.

What is your ideal project?
Working on a double album cover for a Led Zeppelin compilation. And this would be on vinyl, of course!

What software do you use?
Quark 8 and Creative Suite.

Member Profile: Tobin Lehman

How do you feel about being the 2009 ADDY Web Designer & Programmer?
Its a great pleasure to work with many of the talented designers and advertisers in the GFAF. This is my second year working on the ADDY web site and it’s a blast. It’s a great project to “stretch your legs” so to speak and try a few new things. The committee is doing a fabulous job and I think the ceremony is going to be another success this year.

Can you tell us a little bit about where you work?
Recently, I set up my own studio aptly named, Tobin Lehman, and have started to concentrate on providing design and development services to agencies and small businesses along the east coast. Being a one-man show allows me to focus on high quality products from start to finish, without compromise. And I can preform this work below the cost of my competitors because of the lower overhead costs of my home-based studio.

What is your education and work experience?
I have a B.S in Graphic Design and Photography from Pennsylvania State University. I studied under Lanny Sommese, who if you know that name can appreciate the rigors and benefits of that experience. After graduation, I took a job in Rockville at Hirshorn Zuckerman Design Group. This was a great introduction into the world of advertising. I worked primarily as an Information Architect and UI designer for a team of three designers. Eventually the commute caught up with me, and my desire to work closer to home brought me to Enforme Interactive. I loved the experience at Enforme Interactive. A great group of people, and one of the most talented teams I have worked with. During my time at Enforme, I started my MBA from Hood College and anticipate completion in 2010. The MBA is a great extension for a design education, and obviously for running my own business.

Who are your clients?
My clients are mostly small business from the local area. My agency clients range from New York, to Asheville, NC. I like to develop relationships with all my clients. My clients see me as more than a designer or developer, yet as a partner in the decision making process. Being  small business owners themselves, they need honest upfront communication and results. I make sure that what they need is presented to them in a way they can understand, and not smother them in technical terms and web jargon. It’s easy to forget that web is intimidating to many people.

How do you brainstorm for ideas?
Running. It might sound odd, but going on a long run allows me to have my mind travel around and come up with ideas, concepts, and connections. If I can’t make it out for a run, I like to get away from the computer, grab a tablet, and hit the library. I find immersion in the topic is really important to design. A lot of web sites can be really templatized due to the nature of the medium, so it’s important to break out of the box once in a while. Having a solid concept can really help with that.

What is your ideal project?
I’m spending a lot of time right now on mobile web. There is a great potential in this area, and I am setting up a few sites for clients at the moment in the arena. I’d like to work more with this medium on mobile. It really gets down to informatics of the web, or what the web can do for you, right now. With such a small interface and limited interaction, it provides a really awesome challenge to information architecture as well as design.

What software do you use?
My set up contains a Mac Book Pro 2.4, 24in Monitor, Wacom 6×8 Tablet, Adobe Creative Suite CS3, Office 2008, Font Explorer X, and Quicksilver. I have two servers on location for development as well.

Other organizations you’re involved with?
Besides the GFAF, I am a mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

Spotlight On: Tracy Brauner

I grew up in the rural “village” of Palm, Pennsylvania where I attended Upper Perkiomen High School from which I graduated as salutatorian in 2005. At Susquehanna University of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania I spent much of my freshman and sophomore years exploring graphic design and, arguably contradictorily, mathematics as areas of interest (the latter not without much harassment from my design peers).

Please welcome Teresa Dove, our new GFAF chapter administrator. Teresa currently owns a marketing consulting company called Kaleidoscope Marketing Consultants and is involved with many Frederick organizations. She brings event planning, organizational skills and great attention to detail to the chapter and we look forward to having her with us for a long time. And speaking of long times, we would be remiss in not extending a HUGE thank you to former administrator, Joanne Baum, who spent the past ten years serving our members as the primary “go to” person for all GFAF things large and small.
