Eddie Araya :: 2008 ADDY Collateral Designer

Eddie ArayaHow do you feel about being the 2008 ADDY Collateral Designer?
I am excited and nervous at the same time. This is such an awesome opportunity, and I want to be successful. There’s a lot of pressure!

Where do you work?
The Frederick News-Post

What is your job title there?
Graphic Designer

What is your education and work experience?
I earned a BA from the University of Maryland in 1999 studying studio art with an emphasis on graphic design. I began my career at a graphic design and print studio in Gaithersburg learning the ins and outs of printwork and the process involved. My experience has focused almost strictly on print work.

As a recent Frederick local, I came to work at The Frederick News-Post — cutting my commute down from 1.5 hours to 10 minutes. Prior to working as a full-time employee at The Frederick News-Post, I worked as a freelance designer for a number of exciting clients including The Goddard Space Flight Center and Porter Novelli Advertising. I even worked for some time at a nonprofit organization, Vanguard Communications, in Washington, D.C.

Who are your clients?
Frederick businesses, including but not limited to, Washington Sports and Entertainment, Seaworld, Federal Trade Commission, Department of Health and Human Services, NASA, Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Center for American Nurses, Pro Mujer, Chef Ann Cooper, National Cherry Blossom Festival, Epilepsy Foundation, Farm Aid and others.

How do you brainstorm for ideas?
I usually use the Internet and books to do research. I still use the library and check out books on the subject. I write/sketch things in my sketchbook that pertain to the job.

What is your ideal project?
My ideal project would enable me to freely express my idea. I would have the ability to buy stock photos and fonts and be free to do what I wanted in print – die cuts, emboss, foil, varnishes, metallics, etc. – if it fit the design, of course.

What software do you use?
I use Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, InDesign and Multi Ad Creator.

Other organizations you’re involved with?
I’m considering an artist/painting organization.

Anything else you want to mention?
I would like to thank the very talented marketing team at The Frederick News-Post for their critique, support and input.

Thank you to Eddie for volunteering to design the collateral for the 2008 GFAF ADDY Awards!
