Some Like it Ruff

Modern dog

Join us as Michael Strassburger, co-founder of Seattle-based Modern Dog shares his creative perspective as a top digital designer. Explore 20 years of incredible poster design and hear how to incorporate personality into your everyday work. You’ll learn how to overcome creativity blocks and add intrigue to familiar projects while attracting the right kinds of clients for the projects you love.

His new book, Modern Dog: 20 Years of Poster Art, displays their groundbreaking work in poster design over the past two decades. Posters for theater, events, music, social issues and self-promotion run the gamut of approaches and attitudes, but always reflects Strassburger’s distinctive eye. Modern Dog’s heady mix of cheeky humor and punk rock aesthetics makes them unique among design firms—and a heck of a lot of fun.

Marc Weinberg, Salyer and Rhonda McLaughlin, Dov Goldstein and his wife and Tim Finnen rocked the night away!

GFAF and AIGA celebrated the holidays—and each other—with a toast at Frederick Wine Cellars last Saturday night. This event was FREE for members and over thirty members and their guests braved the winter elements to catch up with friends and bid on the member-painted piggy banks.

If you missed the event, you’ll still have a chance to bid on these piggy banks, the GFAF board has decided to continue the auction at the 2009 ADDY Awards! Start your bean counting now! All proceeds will go to the GFAF student scholarship fund.

Thanks to our generous sponsors for making this event happen: Greater Frederick Advertising Federation, AIGA-Blueridge, Rocketfuel Design, Wood Street and Text Design.

ron.jpgHow do you feel about being the 2009 ADDY Collateral Designer?
I feel pretty good about it. I like the final piece with Addy as the starlet. It was fun to see how she came to life, so to speak.
Can you tell us a little bit about where you work ?
The Art Department is a design studio. Our niche is publication design, however, we have become quite versatile with advertising and marketing campaigns.

What is your job title there? Creative Director, but I also don the title of janitor now and then.

What is your education and work experience? Montgomery College and University of Maryland. I worked several years in a small design studio called AURAS Design and also served as Deputy Art Directory at AARP The Magazine.

Who are your clients? Possibly you!

How do you brainstorm for ideas?
Books, music, and long walks. My favorite is taking my iPod and walking through the Antique Emporium.

What is your ideal project?
Working on a double album cover for a Led Zeppelin compilation. And this would be on vinyl, of course!

What software do you use?
Quark 8 and Creative Suite.

Other organizations you’re involved with?
AIGA

Anything else you want to mention?
My favorite Brady was always Marcia!!

Baby, it’s cold outside!

Time to cozy up and gab about the upcoming ADDY Awards. Now I know you’ve all marked your calendars for the big show on March 7. So let’s talk entries. You should have received your invitation and call for entries in the mail — sent with love from yours truly.

Don’t be shy now, surely you have some fabulous work you want to enter this year! All entries are due on Wednesday, January 7th. Personally, the only things that keep me going after the holidays are a stiff drink and good company, so this year’s ADDY drop off’s going to be a bit different. From 3 to 6 pm on the 7th, all entries should be dropped off at Volt Restaurant, located at 228 North Market Street, in their private dining room. Oooh la, la. Entry payment can be made by check, payable to the Greater Frederick Advertising Federation, or just go to the “Entry Payment” section of the ADDY website and pay with plastic.

But don’t drop and beat feet! After you deliver your entries, join your fellow club members in Volt’s lounge to celebrate another year of ADDYs. The fabulous crew at Volt has even created two signature drinks for the event: Expos-ur-tini and ADDY-tini. (Honey, honored doesn’t begin to cover it!)

Now pay attention, entries will NOT be accepted after 6 pm on January 7th. But because they’re such peaches, your ADDY co-chairs have agreed to a late bird deadline of Monday, January 12. These entries MUST be entered online and delivered to Jean Peterson Design, 3 West Church Street, NO LATER THAN 3 pm.

For more info on everything ADDY (from entry drop-off to purchasing tickets, and even those pesky little rules and guidelines) visit www.gfafaddyawards.com.

XOXO,
Addy
