The Frederick Area Photographers Roundtable

Look what happens when members attend one of GFAF’s FREE roundtables!

A year ago in February, the Greater Frederick Advertising Federation’s roundtable series featured a photographers’ roundtable. The discussions included job pricing and techniques for getting new clients. The lunch meeting was a success. It sparked many of the attendees to want to carry on that momentum and meet the next month.

That conversation has been going strong for just over a year as a group called The Frederick Area Photographers Round Table (FAPR). The group consists of a dozen or more professional photographers, cinematographers and members of the design community who are looking to share their knowledge and get their questions answered. “I like the fellowship, the atmosphere of freely sharing experience and information, of ‘being there’ to help one another… The feeling of camaraderie – rather than competition. And, getting to know the folks who make up our ‘community.’ Friends you can count on.” said Ira Wexler of Ira Wexler Photography.

As the group developed further, Adam Frey of Crimson Chain Productions offered to set up an email mailing list that allows the group to share ideas, topics and questions throughout the month with the entire group. “I enjoy the fellowship and range of knowledge shared by this group of talented photographers. I regret not being able to attend every meeting but benefit from communications online,” shared Palma Allen. Now anyone in the group can ask a question to the entire group and often get several answers or suggestions back in just hours, if not minutes. On occasion we have come to each other’s rescue with tricks, from saving data from a corrupted data card, to finding an easier way to color calibrate your system for a client’s specific job.

Topics discussed have ranged from everyday business topics, to software updates, to more business shifting topics like stock photography and the rapid advancements of digital camera technology. “I remember so well when I asked the group about copyrights and use on the web…I got a strong response and learned just what I needed. That alone was worth spending time with you jokers,” laughingly said, John Keith of John Keith Photography.

One aspect that we all look forward to as a group, is giving back to our community. One way that we are doing it is by having a group photography show this summer, July 11th to September 27,2009 at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center, in downtown Frederick.

This show is going to allow us to pool our talents and share work with the community. The show is going to feature some of our traditional photographic works, but also feature an interactive portion of the show focused on cell phone photos. It is still in development, but this section of the show will showcase the images that are taken as the opportunity presents itself. The images will be presented in a raw unframed format. We plan on inviting visitors to share their cell phone photography as well and add it to our growing gallery.

We invite anyone to come out and join us, at noon, on the second Wednesday of the month. The restaurant changes so please email us for each month’s specific location and topics.
